Significance
- Annapurna Jayanti
celebrates the divine birth of Goddess Annapurna, an incarnation of
Goddess Parvati.
- She is revered as the Goddess of
food and cooking, where Anna means food and Purna means
complete.
- It is believed that Goddess Annapurna
ensures her devotees never face scarcity, especially those living in Kashi
(Varanasi).
- According to legend, when food
disappeared from Earth, humans along with Lord Brahma and Vishnu prayed to
Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati then manifested as Annapurna Devi on
Margashirsha Purnima, restoring abundance.

- South India:
In many temples, Annapurna Jayanti is observed in the month of Chaitra.
- West Bengal:
Celebrated in Chaitra with unique rituals.
- Varanasi, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh:
Special pujas and Annadanam are held in Annapurna temples.
Rituals & Things to
Do
- Perform Shodashopachar Pooja
(16 sacred offerings).
- Offer Annabhishekam (cooked
rice and grains) to Goddess Annapurna.
- Women observe fast
on this day, breaking it after evening puja.
- Recite the Annapurna Devi Ashtakam, considered highly auspicious.
