Each tilak has its meaning and is associated with several gods and customs. The meanings of the four major categories of tilaks are listed below.
Krishna Tilak
- Material:
Gopi-chandana (sacred clay from Dvaraka)
- Shape:
Two vertical 'U'-shaped lines
- Symbolism:
Krishna’s footprints; Tulsi leaf (in some versions)
- Devotion:
Signifies surrender to Lord Krishna and purity of heart
Shiva Tilak (Tripundra)
- Material:
Sacred ash (bhasma)
- Shape:
Three horizontal lines across the forehead
- Symbolism:
Spiritual wisdom, detachment, soul purification
- Devotion:
Represents self-control and dedication to Lord Shiva’s path
Vishnu Tilak
- Material:
White clay or sandalwood paste
- Shape:
Two vertical lines with a red/yellow stripe in the center
- Symbolism:
Vishnu’s feet and Lakshmi’s presence
- Devotion:
Faith in Vishnu as protector and commitment to dharma
Vaishnav Tilak
- Material:
White clay; sometimes sacred ash and red dot
- Shape:
Two vertical lines; optional black center line and red dot
- Symbolism:
Feet of Vishnu/Krishna/Rama; spiritual connection; Lakshmi’s grace
- Devotion: Surrender to divine will and Vaishnavite values
