Bhanu Saptami – A Celebration of Lord Surya’s Divine Energy
Bhanu Saptami, also known
as Surya Saptami or Vivaswat Saptami, is a revered day dedicated to Lord Surya,
the Sun God. This auspicious occasion falls on a Sunday and marks the day Surya
first appeared, riding his chariot of seven horses, symbolizing the spectrum of
colors and vital life energy.
Observance of Bhanu
Saptami takes place on Shukla Paksha Saptami (the seventh day during the
waxing moon phase in the traditional Hindu lunar calendar). It is celebrated
with great fervor by different Hindu communities in various months:
- Magh Month
(January–February) – the main Bhanu Saptami known as Ratha Saptami.
- Falguna Month
(February–March).
- Jyeshta Month
(June–July).
- Kartik Month
(November–December).
- Margashirsh Month
(December–January).
The rituals include
performing Mahabhishek after the first sun rays fall on the Surya
Yantra. Devotees chant sacred hymns such as Aditya Hrudayam and other
Surya stotras, invoking Lord Surya’s blessings for health and prosperity.
Significance of Bhanu
Saptami Puja:

good fortune.
- Observing this day is believed to
ensure a healthy and fulfilling life.
Bhanu Saptami is
considered the most auspicious among all Saptamis and is widely celebrated in
South India and parts of Western India.
