Location
Sri Nilamadhava Temple is
situated on the right bank of the Mahanadi River at Kantilo, in Khandapada
block, Nayagarh district, Odisha. The temple lies near twin hills
surrounded by forest, about 82 km from Bhubaneswar and 33 km from
Nayagarh town.
Deities
- Lord Nilamadhava (Vishnu)

Temple Significance
- Considered a central shrine in the
Jagannath cult, as Lord Nilamadhava is linked to the origins of Lord
Jagannath worship.

the feet of Lord Nilamadhava is a unique attraction.
- The temple structure resembles the Jagannath
Temple of Puri.
- Located at the Triveni Sangam (confluence
of Mahanadi, Kuanria, and Kusumi rivers), it is regarded as Odisha’s
equivalent of Prayag’s Beni‑Madhava.
History & Legends
- Worship began in a small cave on the Brahmadri
hills by Biswabasu, the Sabara tribal chief, who revered the
deity as Kitung.
- According to the Puranas, the
deity was originally worshipped as an Indranila gem image known as
Nilamadhava.
- Later, the daru murti tradition
(wooden idol worship) evolved, forming the basis of Jagannath worship in
Puri.
