What is Upang Lalita
Vrat?
Upang Lalita Vrat, also
known as Lalitha Panchami, is observed on the Shukla Panchami of Ashwayuja
Masam, coinciding with the fifth day of Navratri. It is dedicated to
Goddess Lalitha Devi, revered as one of the most powerful
Mahavidyas—also known as Tripura Sundari and Shodashi.
This vrat is especially
popular in Gujarat and Maharashtra, while in Southern India,
Lalitha Devi is worshipped as a form of Goddess Chandi.
Scriptural Significance
- Mentioned in the Kalika Purana,
Lalitha Devi is believed to have manifested to defeat the demon Bhanda,
born from the ashes of Kamadeva.
- She embodies the five elements (Pancha
Mahabhutas) and is considered an incarnation of Durga/Shakti.
