Significance: Marks the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura after
nine days of battle. It is the spiritual prelude to Vijaya Dashami (Dasara)
and is considered auspicious for initiating new ventures.
Forms of Worship Across
India
South India
- Ayudha Puja:
Ritual purification and worship of tools, vehicles, books, and
instruments—honoring the divine in all forms of work.
- Saraswathi Puja:
Goddess Durga is revered as Saraswathi Devi, the embodiment of
wisdom and learning.
- Bhattukamma Festival (Telangana):
Women arrange vibrant flowers in seven-layered stacks and offer them to Goddess
Gauri with devotional songs and dances.
North India
- Kanya Puja:
Nine young girls are worshipped as the nine forms of Durga. They are
offered food, gifts, and new clothes, symbolizing purity and divine
femininity.
Eastern India
- Durga Puja Rituals:
Elaborate ceremonies and offerings to Goddess Durga, culminating in
grandeur before immersion on Dashami.
Mysore (Karnataka)
- Royal Sword Worship:
The royal family performs rituals for the sword, symbolizing valor and
dharma.
- Dasara Processions:
